Carolyn Elizabeth Joy, 66, died 30 September 2009 at Hartford Hospital after a long illness.
Ms. Joy was a lifelong resident of CT, the daughter of Alfred Joy and Helen (nee Starbuck) Joy of West Hartford. She attended Conard High School and Champlain College in Burlington, VT.
Ms. Joy was a life-long member of the Democratic Party and longtime political activist, having been involved in anti-war, anti-nuclear, and animal rights causes until her last days. She was an animal lover whose affection for her dogs and cats she spread to everyone around her. One of her most fervent wishes came true in the election of Barak Obama to the Presidency. Her most cherished cause was women’s rights and the prevention of violence against women, and she worked as a staff counselor for the Interval House of Hartford, a shelter for abused women, for over fifteen years.
She was a devoted mother and grandmother and is survived by two sons, James Meacham, 3rd of Long Beach, California, and Michael Meacham, of Miami Beach, Florida, a daughter, Kelly Martin, of San Antonio, Texas, and three grandchildren, Gabriel Meacham, Isabel Zweig, and Peyton Martin. She was predeceased by her common-law husband, Roger Januszewski, in April of this year, and she also leaves her brother, David Joy, of Deep River.
A memorial service will be held in November. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation in her name to either the Interval House (P.O. Box 340207 Hartford, CT 06134-0207) or the Humane Society of Connecticut (701 Russell Road, Newington CT 06111)
